iPhone App by GaugeFace
Â
I ran across this product on a tech website, I have to say it looks to be a very promising application. The GaugeFace iphone Dock, and App combo will let you see your tachometer, speed, direction, temperature, gear, and turn signal indicators, all in the space of your iPhones screen. It works by connecting your iPhone to your ECU (engine control unit), through the iPhone cable. The good thing about the set up is you can actually charge your phone while having it plugged into your ECU. Based on Gauge Faces website, there are plans to update the app in the future to read your air/fuel mixture, battery Gauge, and fuel levels.
If your worried about protecting your iPhone or iPod touch, from the notorious HD vibrations you shouldn't worry to much as Apple actually uses solid state drives in their devices. What that means is there are no moving parts to be broken due to the vibrations.
The GaugeFace system costs $250.00. What do you get if you purchase this item? Well you get the cable that connects your ECU to your iPhone/iPod. In terms of mounting you have to figure that part out. GaugeFace recommends Ram Mounts to secure your device. I have to second that as I have had nothing but good experiences with Ram Mount products in the past. (read the review)
As of now I would rate this product, at a 6.5 out of 10. I would like to get my hands on a unit to test. In the comments there seems to be a few questions about glare, weather, longevity, and proper installation. Riding in Arizona we don't worry to much about rain, but there are several products out there such as otter boxes, that can weather proof the phone. As far as glare in concerned the iPhone usually does a good job on keeping a clear picture even in direct sunlight (without using any cases/screen protectors) The only installation recommendation on the website was to not route the cable near the spark plugs.

In closing this would be a great product for a stripped down bike, or maybe a bike that only has a speedometer. I'm looking forward to seeing updates to the app, as it would make it more valuable for more bikes.
