Day Ride: Kit Peak Observatory, Arizona

Kitt Peak

From Litchfield Park area.

AZ 85 into Gila Bend, continue south on AZ 85 into AJO, AZ 86 to Sells and then 20 more miles to Kitt Peak turn off. The road to the top is around 12 miles.

Fuel in Ajo and Sells. It is about 100 miles from Ajo to Sells.

We left around 08:00, had breakfast in Gila Bend. Our new member Lex, only had a fuel range of around 120 miles, so we had to make a little detour to get him fuel. It would suck having to push his Honda-Davidson.

Well anyway, it was a little breezy but very nice. Kitt Peak observatory is over 6500 feet. It was chilly. We took the 10 minute uphill walk to the 4 meter telescope observation deck. Nice view. I hate heights. But it was still nice. The ride from Gila Bend to Ajo was at a rather spirited pace. When you get passed by a motorhome towing a car you know 70 mph is too slow. We encountered on Border Patrol check point, going south you don’t have to stop. (duh, they don’t care if you are leaving). We continued to Ajo, topped off fuel and continued to AZ86 onto reservation land. The road was nice, some nice sweeping turns but nothing spectacular. The views however were nice. Detour for fuel, see above and up to the peak.

On the way back the only place that looked safe for food was a Pizza Hut. So we ate at around 5, and home in our cozy little homes by 8. Nice 400 +- ride. It felt good to get out for a ride and to some place we had never been.

On a side note. We took this ride two days after 4 of our fellow motorcycle riders were killed in a senseless incident. Some of the other groups decided to have an impromptu get together in their memory. Our choice was to ride. These motor cycle meet-up groups are about riding. Those that were killed, those recovering in the hospital, all loved to ride. We rode. That’s what we do. They were a large part of our thoughts and conversation for the day. Rest in peace all of our fellow motorcycle riders, heal quickly those who survived.
